Knapweed

Knapweed
Common Knapweed, Centaurea Nigra. It looks to me like a wild bachelors button. Only the  flower head is edible and when taken with pepper, it's said to be a way of restoring lost appetite.. Medicinally it is used for wound healing, sore throats, bleeding gums and catarrh. Some physicians mixed it with other herbs to create antidotes for snake bites. When used medicinally,  the dried root and seeds are used mainly in decoctions, made from one ounce of the dried seeds or root to one pint of water. You boil this mixture until the liquid is reduced by half and then strain it. The dose is apparently 75 millilitres up to three times a day.
Knapweed Seed Pods Over Purple Vetch
I love how the seed pods look like tiny golden pine cones.

My blog is meant to inform and I strive to be totally accurate. It is solely up to the reader to ensure proper plant identification. Some wild plants are poisonous or can have serious adverse health effects.

Backyard Wildlife

Bunny In My Yard
A wildlife morning with chipmunk and rabbit visitors. I feel lucky to see just one, but both within minutes, was extra special.
Cherry Eating Chipmunk
The little Chipmunk who lives in my garden, has been eating the cherries off my cherry bushes. Here you can see it stuffing it's cheeks. Today we got very close and it even ate sunflower seeds from my hand.
Chipmunks are part of the squirrel family and they are smaller, with alternating light and dark stripes along their cheeks and backs. There are 25 species of chipmunk, 24 of which live in North America. Chipmunks are excellent tree climbers and swimmers who live in a variety of habitats, including plains, mountains, forests, and deserts. Chipmunks like to live alone in holes or burrows called dens. Chipmunks hibernate in cold weather, which means they spend most of the winter sleeping in their dens. One chipmunk can gather up to 165 acorns in a day. In just two days, a chipmunk can collect enough food to last an entire winter, although chipmunks typically hoard much more food than necessary. Chipmunk young are born in late spring, and stay in the nest for up to six weeks. Female chipmunks have one or two litters per year, each with four or five babies. Chipmunks are 7.2 to 8.5 inches (18.5 to 21.6 centimeters) long including their tails, which can account for nearly half of their length.
