I found this in the woods, in Essex Jct. Vermont, a few weeks ago, and wondered what it is. Turns out that it's Baneberry, after the berries fall off. Actaea pachypoda Ell., doll's-eyes, white baneberry. The fruits of both red or white baneberry are poisonous. Native Americans used the roots in herbal medicine and as a ritual plant.
